Tapirs in Corcovado

The Tapir is a large, actually the heaviest mammal in Costa Rica. There are several species in the world, the one found in Centralamerica is Baiird`s Tapir, a beautiful animal. This gentle herbivorous mammal is related to the elephants. It inhabits dense tropical rainforests in Costa Rica, along both costs and from 0 meters above sea level to up to 1500 meters above sea level.

The sightings in Corcovado have become more frequent ever since the animal became protected. The animal can seen especially often in the San Pedrillo and the Sirena Park Ranger Station, both inside the tropical forest when exploring a trail or also on the beach.
